Goat Rearing: Challenges & Opportunities

Goat Farming Business is no less than a boon for the Vulnerable, Poor & Landless families at present time, but due to the changing environment, today goats are not getting proper nutrition due to less availability of green fodder as cultivable land areas decreasing ina very fast pace. As a result sudden death, excessive diseases & low productivity hampering the expected income of the Goat Farmers. Apart from this, natural disasters like floods, droughts, and other lot of difficulties in the rearing of Goats are affected due to low awareness & support systems.

TGT Global in association with ICICI Foundation is working in one cluster of 12 villages on Goat based Livelihood Promotion in Kanti Block of Muzaffarpur District of Bihar State. In these villages, after the capacity building of Pashu Sakhi Didi who provides service of First Aid at the doorstep, Proper advice & awareness on Feed & Fodder, Management, and Supplementary Food. As a result, the mortality in this area has been reduced from 35% to below 10% and production capacity has been increased.

Today, Pashu Sakhi didi processed the goat dung into manure as a salable product, which is thrown away by most of the goat readers and generally seen as a heap on the roadsides. After this intervention, the goat farmers are also getting some income from the sale of goat droppings. The livestock sector is witnessing an unprecedented transformation in Kanti Block through tireless efforts at the field level team the ICICI Foundation team and Technical Support from TGT Global.
