Goat farming is a vital source of income, nutrition and livelihood for millions of rural households globally. However, one of the major challenges faced by most goat farmers is high morbidity (illness) and mortality (death) rate among their animals. These losses can devastate small-scale farmers by reducing productivity, increasing costs and threatening food security.

Fortunately, many of these problems are preventable by adopting improved management techniques, farmers can significantly reduce disease incidence and death rates, leading to healthier and productive herds with higher profits.

Proper Nutrition (The Foundation of Health): A well-balanced diet strengthens goats’ immune systems and improves growth and reproduction. Key practices include:

  • Providing adequate quality fodder and roughage, especially during dry seasons.

  • Supplementing with minerals and vitamins, particularly selenium, copper and zinc.

  • Ensuring clean, fresh water is always available.

  • Avoiding sudden feed changes to prevent digestive upsets.

  • Observe acclimatisation in case of newly inducted goats

Hygienic Housing and Environment: Poor housing conditions increase exposure to pathogens and stress, leading to sickness.

  • Build well-cross ventilated, dry shelters with protection from extreme weather.

  • Maintain clean floors and bedding and remove droppings/ dung daily.

  • Ensure good drainage by keeping slope around shelters to prevent waterlogging and parasite breeding in built-up area.

  • Limit overcrowding to reduce stress and disease transmission for animal welfare.

Regular Health Monitoring and Vaccination: Early detection and prevention are critical.

  • Conduct daily health checks to spot signs of illness such as coughing, diarrhoea or lameness.

  • Follow a vaccination schedule tailored to local disease risks (e.g., PPR, goat pox, enterotoxaemia).

  • Deworm goats regularly based on veterinary advice and must before and after rains

  • Quarantine new or sick animals to prevent spread by keeping them in isolation for 7-10 days.

Effective Breeding Management: Healthy breeding stock and controlled mating reduce congenital issues and increase herd resilience.

  • Select goats with good health and disease resistance for breeding.

  • Avoid inbreeding to maintain genetic diversity.

  • Manage breeding seasons to optimize kidding times for feed availability.

Parasite Control: Internal and external parasites weaken goats and cause severe illness.

  • Implement rotational grazing to reduce pasture contamination.

  • Use anthelmintics (de-wormers) as recommended to avoid resistance.

  • Practice regular grooming and check for ticks, lice and mites.

Training and Record-Keeping: Educated farmers make better decisions.

  • Participate in training programs on goat health and improved management practices.

  • Keep records of births, deaths, vaccinations, treatments and feed.

  • Use records to identify recurring problems and measure improvements.

Community Collaboration: Disease control is more effective when done collectively.

  • Work with neighbouring farmers to coordinate vaccination and deworming campaigns.

  • Share knowledge and resources to tackle common challenges.

  • Report disease outbreaks promptly to veterinary authorities.

Morbidity and mortality are major threats behind the success of goat farming, but with effective and improved management techniques, these losses can be minimized. By focusing on preventive measures, nutrition, hygiene, health care, breeding and community cooperation so, farmers can build stronger, healthier herds that provide sustainable income and assured nutrition for their families. Investing time and effort into healthy management not only saves goats but also secures the future of rural livelihoods.
